Frequently Asked Questions
1. How often do you recommend hoof care services?
A great question! It depends! Trimming and shoeing are done with specific goals in mind. One being managing what is called "distortions." This occurs when the hoof structures become overgrown to the point that they are having a negative impact on the hoof health, structure, and function. Another goal includes meeting balance parameters for tendons as well as joints.
2. Why do equines need shoes or trims when wild ones do not?
Another great question! Equines in the wild have certain genetics, are adapted to their environment, and do not carry the additional weight of tack and rider across terrain they are not familiar with and hooves aren't conditioned for. Domesticated equines are also affected by genetics which may not be as strong in size and strength for its body mass, travel across surfaces they aren't accustomed, or may require additional traction for a specific discipline. For equines with rotation or sinking from laminitis or some other injury, the shoes or trims are essential to meet the needs not only of the hooves but also all the structures contained within or around the hooves/distal limb.
3. What can I do as an equine owner to promote healthy hooves?
Schedule routine care with a qualified hoof care professional, check hooves daily to observe any changes that warrant attention, feed a species appropriate diet, maintain a healthy equine overall through routine and appropriate veterinarian care, appropriate animal husbandry practices (excessively wet environments can have negative impact on hooves), and encourage proper movement.
4. What areas do you service?
Based in Fauquier County, Virginia, I mostly travel to surrounding counties like Culpeper, Prince William, Loudoun and Rappahannock . The map gives a general idea of the service area. Other counties/locations would be considered on case by case basis.
